‘The New Wonder-Flautist’ and international star Ana de la Vega, has returned to her birth country after 16 years on the world’s most renowned stages. Artistic Director of Canberra’s phenomenal new Snow Concert Hall, de la Vega announces a world-class new music series in the capital. This is the first concert held as part of the Snow Concert Hall International Series, de la Vega will open as a soloist together with the sparkling Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.
The beautifully balanced program will open with Mozart’s most famous and loved orchestral work, Eine kleine Nachtmusik followed by Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings – one of the most recognisable pieces of classical music in the world. It has become the semi-official music for mourning, used at Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s funeral and after JFK’s assassination. But somewhere along the way, it has transformed from an anthem of sadness to one of uplifting joy. The first half closes with one of Vivaldi’s most celebrated and virtuosic flute concertos, Tempesta di Mare or (“Storm of the Sea”).
Edward Elgar’s luscious Serenade for String opens the second half and can stake a healthy claim as one of the very first works ever written by Elgar. It is not only one of Elgar’s earliest compositions, but also one of the most frequently performed of all his orchestral works. Later in life the English giant professed this little jewel of a piece to be his personal favourite of all his works.
The evening comes to a frivolous, sparkling and virtuosic close with Carl Stamitz’ Flute Concerto in D, a piece de la Vega recorded to world-wide acclaim on Dutch label Pentatone together with Norway’s famed Trondheim Soloists.

About Ana Del La vega
Australian flautist Ana de la Vega has been named by one of Germany’s leading newspapers “The New Wonder-Flautist” (Welt am Sonntag), and the Berlin Morning Post has written “Critics are unanimous that she is one of the most outstanding artists of our time”.
Recently leaping onto the international classical music scene Ana’s playing has attracted unbridled attention world wide for her ‘crystal-clear’ and ‘velvety tone’ (NDR Kultur), ‘superior, masterful technique’ (Fono Forum), ‘feathery-light playing’ (Der Spiegel), and ‘unobtrusive virtuosity’ (Pizzicato).
Ana has appeared as soloist in the world’s most prestigious concert halls including, Philharmonie Berlin, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Wigmore Hall London, and Munich Philharmonie Gasteig to name a few, as well as been invited as soloist with leading orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, German Chamber Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Szczechin Philharmonic, Bremen Philharmonic, Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie, and the Trondheim Soloists.
Melbourne Chamber Orchestra
Melbourne Chamber Orchestra is Victoria’s preeminent small orchestra and the leading independent Victorian chamber music organisation. For over 30 years, the orchestra has created a distinctive orchestral practice, with a collegial ethos, exploratory programming, and ambitious regional touring. The Artistic Director is the respected Australian violinist, chamber musician and artistic leader Sophie Rowell.

The orchestra presents a twelve-concert flagship Melbourne orchestral season at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Broadcasts and streaming by MBS Fine Music network and Australian Digital Concert Hall extend access to its work nationally and internationally.
